Robert Walker abandons strong, graphic lines or blocks of colour in favor of busy photographs that show how real experience combines with advertising hoarding in contemporary New York streets, blurring the boundaries between the two. If, as Walker Evans sniffily put it in 1969, colour photography is “vulgar”, Walker uses that vulgarity to striking effect.
